It’s getting to be the time of year when, in the South, we start experiencing spring-like days here and there. In Texas, we had just that last weekend: temperatures reached the upper 70s for 4 straight days! Those temps, combined with an abundance of sunshine, sent us running for the lake. Anytime you can spend a winter weekend in your bikini on a boat is a win in my book (and leaves me desperate for spring!).
Since we were not sure if the weather would actually feel warm enough for laying out, my girlfriends and I decided to wear our bikinis under a pair of shorts and a light sweater. It ended up getting pretty toasty in the sunshine, so we were able to shed our layers and work on our tans for a while. The boys seemed comfortable in either swim trunks or shorts and tees; however, when the breeze picked up and the sun began to fade in the late afternoon sky, we all had to put a few layers back on. For the most part, though, shorts and a light sweater was the perfect combination.
I wore a Lilly Pulitzer romper under my trusty go-to J. Crew Factory sweater (which you’ve seen here and here), and paired it with my favorite Ray-Ban aviators and Rainbow flip flops. Rainbows are my favorite sandals for the lake because they are comfy, durable, and somehow look better after repeatedly getting wet and sun-bleached.
Since we will hopefully be seeing more and more of this pleasant weather as February rolls along and March sneaks up, I’ve rounded-up some of my favorite pieces that are perfect for these pre-spring days, when you’re fine in shorts as long as you have a warmer layer on top.
I love all of these shorts, especially these scalloped Lilly Pulitzer ones. These aqua Vineyard Vines fish printed ones are super cute too, and look so comfy! The solid aqua pair also comes in a hot pink colorway, as well as a light, flamingo pink that is to die for. And these orange printed ones are so cute and summer-y.
You can never go wrong with stripes when you’re on or near the water. The classic nautical navy + white J. Crew sweater is a perfect choice, but I love the idea of adding a little color – like this persimmon or this lemonade color. Lilly Pulitzer also knows how to add a little color, and this striped sweater is no exception. I have this Vineyard Vines Shep Shirt in white and blue seersucker, but I love the simple orange outline of the whale on the back of this marine color. And, obviously, the sailboat sweater is the perfect choice for an outing on the lake. I just added it to my J. Crew shopping cart!
I’ve also included some of the cutest totes to take along to the lake (or river/beach/park/etc.) for your blankets, sunscreen (YES, you need it – even in February!!), snacks, and other necessities.
I always take a big, spacious bag to the lake. Some of the items I always bring along? Two kinds of sunscreen (face + body), lip balm, towel, cozies, bottle opener, auxiliary cord (for listening to music on the boat), detangling spray and detangling comb (because it’s always windy), hand sanitizer, and popcorn or some other snack to share. All of these totes are relatively large and would make great options for the lake. I especially love the Stella McCartney for Adidas one, because it is water resistant.
